NYCBA Members Newsletter

Vol. 3, No. 1 October, 2005

Welcome to the October 2005 issue of our Newsletter.

President's Message:

There is continuing concern about getting timely access to our incarcerated clients and being able to have confidentiality attorney-client meetings, especially at MDC and MCC. As discussed in my 9/26/05 email to the NYCBA membership, there was great concern expressed at the NYCBA Board meeting on 9/21/05 about the lack of attorney interview rooms at MDC (new building)--requiring client meetings to be held in the visiting area and thereby compromising confidentiality--and also about delays and denials of attorney access at MDC (new building, in particular) and MCC. Please send me details of problems you and your colleagues are aware of to date and encounter in the future.

The film "After Innocence" is being shown starting 10/21/05 at the Quad Cinema, 34 W. 13th Ct. (212) 255-8800. The premier of the film is on 10/20 at 7 p.m. at the Loew's 19th St. theater (890 Broadway), followed by a benefit. This award-winning film tells the story of the exonerated as they struggle to make it on the outside without help from the government which wrongly imprisoned them. From 10/21-11/3/05, at 7:30 p.m. weekdays and 3 p.m on weekends, some of the exonerated who are featured in the film, and the filmmakers and others will be on hand to discuss the film and answer questions. Seating is limited for these special screenings and should be ordered in advance. If enough NYCBA members are interested in attending together, we may try to order a block of tickets. Running time is 96 minutes. Please let me know if you are interested. For additional information, you can visit www.afterinnocence.com.

Photos from the June 2005 annual dinner are now available on our website (in the "Members" section, go to "Upcoming events" where there is tab for photos).

I look forward to seeing as many of you as possible at our annual CLE program on the U.S. Supreme Court, to be held on 10/25/05.
